The Best Walking Trails in Troy, MI for Exercise and Stress Relief
There aren't many things we love more than getting outside for a walk around Troy.
As a local business owner, personal trainer, wife, and mom, I know how easy it is for the day to fill up before you've had a chance to do something for yourself. Sometimes, getting outside for a walk is exactly what I need. It's a chance to move my body, clear my head, spend time with my family, or simply step away from everything for a little while.
And that's something I remind our clients at Peak Physique all the time: movement doesn't always have to look like a workout.
Going for a walk absolutely counts.
We're lucky to have several parks and walking trails right here in Troy, and even more if you're willing to drive a few minutes outside the city. So, I wanted to put together some of the best walking trails in Troy, MI, along with a few of my favorite options nearby.
Whether you're looking for a brisk walk for exercise, somewhere to take the kids, or a quiet trail where you can decompress after a long day, there's something on this list for you.

Walking can support both your physical fitness and mental well-being.
Every walk counts, whether you're exercising, spending time with family, or simply clearing your head.
Our Favorite Walking Trails in Troy, MI
Let's start close to home! Troy doesn't have a huge network of long hiking trails, but we do have some great places to get outside and move.
Troy Trail at P. Terry & Barbara Knight Park
If you're looking for an easy paved walk, the Troy Trail near Daisy Knight Dog Park is a great place to start.
The first section of the Troy Trail is about one mile long and begins near the entrance to Daisy Knight Dog Park at 3401 Livernois. It winds through a natural, wooded area and connects the Civic Center Campus to the Troy Historic Village.
I love trails like this because you don't have to turn the walk into a whole event. You can head out for a quick mile when you have time, take the family along, or add more distance when you want a little more exercise.
And because it's paved, it's an approachable option if you're just starting to add more walking into your fitness routine.
Sylvan Glen Lake Park
If you'd rather have some water and nature around you while you walk, try Sylvan Glen Lake Park at 5501 Rochester Road.
The Troy Trail section here is about three-quarters of a mile and takes you through the park's natural areas and around the lake.
This is the kind of walk I recommend when you need movement and a mental break.
Not every day needs to be about how fast you walked or how many calories you burned. Sometimes, getting outside, walking around the lake, and giving yourself a little space to think is enough.
That's what we mean at Peak Physique when we talk about where movement meets mental health.
Jaycee Park
Jaycee Park at 1755 E. Long Lake Road (just down the street from us at Peak Physique!) has another section of the Troy Trail, with about 0.8 miles of paved pathway running through the park and into the surrounding neighborhoods.
There's also a bridge crossing surrounded by the park's wooded scenery, which makes this one feel a little more removed from the roads and businesses we see every day.
Because it's a shorter route, you can make it whatever you need it to be. Walk it once when you only have a little time or repeat the route when you want to get more steps in.
Stage Nature Center
When you really want to feel like you've gotten away for a little while without actually leaving Troy, Stage Nature Center is one of the best places to go.
Located at 6685 Coolidge Highway, the nature center sits within roughly 100 acres and has about two miles of trails through forests, meadows, wetlands, and marsh areas.
This one feels less like a traditional exercise path and more like an actual nature walk, which is part of what makes it so nice.
If you've spent the entire day staring at a computer, running errands, taking care of the kids, or bouncing from one responsibility to another, slowing down and walking somewhere surrounded by trees can feel pretty great.
Raintree Park
Raintree Park is another easy option for getting your steps in right here in Troy.
The park has a paved walking path that's just under a mile and travels through shaded, wooded areas. It's also stroller-friendly, which can make a huge difference when you're trying to stay active with little ones.
As a mom, I'm a big believer in finding ways to make movement work with the life you actually have.
If today's workout is pushing a stroller around the park, that counts.
Boulan Park
Boulan Park at 1898 Boulan Park Drive has one of the longer paved park loops on this list at roughly 1.25 miles.
It's a great option if you want to know exactly how far you've walked without having to map out your route beforehand.
You can walk one loop, add another, pick up your pace, or simply enjoy being outside. There's no rule that says every walk has to look the same.
Want to Go a Little Farther? Walking Trails Near Troy, MI
As much as we love Troy, our local trails tend to be on the shorter side.
Luckily, one of the benefits of living in this part of Michigan is that you don't have to travel very far to find longer trails and nature preserves.
If you want to turn your walk into more of an adventure, these walking trails near Troy, MI are worth the short drive.
Red Oaks Nature Center
Red Oaks Nature Center in Madison Heights is one of the closest options when you want a little more nature without driving far from Troy.
There's an approximately 1.3-mile paved loop through the wooded property, making it an easy option for beginners or anyone who simply wants a relaxing walk outside.
This is another good reminder that you don't need to hike five miles for your walk to be worthwhile.
Sometimes a mile through the woods is exactly what you need.
Paint Creek Trail
When you're ready for some serious mileage, Paint Creek Trail gives you plenty of it.
The trail runs for about 8.9 miles through Rochester, Rochester Hills, Oakland Township, Orion Township, and Lake Orion, passing through wooded areas, fields, prairies, and wetlands along Paint Creek.
But don't let the total distance intimidate you!
You don't have to walk all nine miles. Pick an access point, walk for 20 or 30 minutes, and turn around. As your endurance improves, you can gradually explore farther.
That's one of the things I love about walking as exercise: you get to meet yourself exactly where you are.
Clinton River Trail
The Clinton River Trail is another great option when you're looking for more distance.
The 16-mile multi-use trail travels through several Oakland County communities, including Rochester Hills and Rochester, and connects with other regional trails.
For walking, that gives you tons of flexibility.
You can head out for a casual walk with a friend, set yourself a distance goal, or use the trail to gradually build your endurance over time.
You Don't Have to Call It a Workout
One thing I wish more people understood about fitness is that movement doesn't have to be all or nothing.
You don't have to walk five miles or hit a certain number of steps.
You don't have to turn every walk into a power walk, and you definitely don't have to feel exhausted afterward for it to “count.”
Walking can be a way to add activity to your week, spend time with your spouse or kids, catch up with a friend, enjoy our local parks, or give yourself 30 quiet minutes after a stressful day.
If you're trying to improve your fitness, those walks can also complement a strength-training routine and help you build a more active lifestyle overall.
At Peak Physique, we always want fitness to work with your life rather than against it.

At Peak Physique, we create personalized fitness plans around your goals, your starting point, and your real life. Because there's no single “right” way to be active.
